Common Paper Jams and How to Fix Them

4 min read • Category: Paper Jams

Paper jams are one of the most common printer problems. They happen to everyone, often at the worst possible moment. The good news is that most paper jams are easy to fix once you understand what causes them and how to clear them correctly.

What Causes a Paper Jam?

Understanding the cause helps you prevent future jams. Here are the most common reasons:

  • Overfilled paper tray - Putting too much paper in the tray can cause multiple sheets to feed at once.
  • Wrong paper type - Using paper that is too thick, too thin, or curled increases jam risk.
  • Worn rollers - The rubber rollers that pull paper through the printer wear down over time.
  • Debris inside - Small bits of paper, dust, or other particles can block the paper path.
  • Improper loading - Paper that is not loaded squarely or is wrinkled can jam easily.

Step-by-Step Guide to Clearing a Paper Jam

Step 1: Turn Off the Printer

Always start by turning off the printer and unplugging it. This prevents any mechanical movement while you are working and keeps you safe.

Step 2: Open All Access Panels

Open the front cover, rear cover, and any other access panels. Most printers have multiple entry points to reach jammed paper. Refer to your printer manual if you are unsure where panels are located.

Step 3: Remove Loose Paper First

Gently remove any paper that is clearly visible. Pull in the direction the paper would normally feed. Avoid yanking or pulling backwards, as this can tear the paper and leave fragments inside.

Tip: If the paper is stuck and will not slide out easily, do not force it. Try opening additional panels to access the paper from a different angle.

Step 4: Check Inside for Fragments

Use a flashlight to look for small torn pieces of paper inside the printer. Even a small fragment can cause another jam. Carefully remove any pieces you find with tweezers if needed.

Step 5: Inspect the Rollers

While the panels are open, check the rubber rollers. Clean them with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Worn or shiny rollers may need to be replaced.

Step 6: Close and Test

Close all panels securely, plug the printer back in, and turn it on. Print a test page to confirm the jam is cleared.

Preventing Future Paper Jams

Follow these simple habits to reduce the chance of future jams:

  • Do not overfill the paper tray. Keep paper below the fill line.
  • Store paper in a cool, dry place to prevent curling or moisture absorption.
  • Fan the paper stack before loading to separate sheets.
  • Clean the paper rollers every few months.
  • Use paper that is within the recommended weight range for your printer.

When to Seek Professional Help

If paper jams happen frequently even after following these steps, there may be an underlying mechanical issue. In that case, it is best to have a qualified technician examine the printer. You can also reach out to us for guidance on what to do next.
